Faerie Made® is a woman owned business located in Asheville, North Carolina creating quality artisan soaps and fine skin care products from natural ingredients.
My name is Tina Glenn and I am an Asheville native and resident of West Asheville since 1991. I grew up with an understanding of herbal remedies found just by taking a walk in the yard or in the woods. This interest increased as a mother while I created tinctures and salves for my children. The love of herbal crafting became ingrained in my being. Soap making became a passion for me after receiving my first bar of handmade soap in 1999 when working as an advocate for battered women at the local domestic violence agency. A woman came in with a bundle of handmade, calico wrapped soap. After speaking for a long time with the woman about soap making and ingredients, I was given a basic recipe for soap. 6 months later, I overcame my fear of lye, the alkali that turns oils into soap, and an addiction began. Soon, any and all oils, nut butters, herbs, botanicals and clays became a potential ingredient for soap. Faerie Made® as a business began in 2002 after the birth of my youngest child. Not wanting to re-enter the workforce and leave my daughter, I worked from the home creating artisan soaps, hemp seed oil lip balms and fine skin care products using natural ingredients. Now, as my daughter grows, Faerie Made® grows.
I have done a lot of research to ensure that the ingredients in my soap and body care are high quality, purchasing locally when possible and when local is not an option, then the criteria is on other small ethically minded businesses. For example, the minimally refined African shea nut butter I use is fair-trade and African owned, supporting a community located in Togo, in West Africa. I believe that one can save a dollar by purchasing from large corporations, but the individuals suffer in the long run. Community is important. Today, Faerie Made® is located in health food stores, fine spas, salons, and quality gift shops. In addition, this small business offers a thriving retail side found at fine arts and craft shows and here on the world wide web.
